Team Development

The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say ‘I’. And that’s not because they have trained themselves not to say ‘I’. They don’t think ‘I’. They think ‘we’; they think ‘team’. They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don’t sidestep it, but ‘we’ gets the credit…. This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done.

Peter Drucker

We work with teams from senior management and director level to front line service delivery teams. We consider that teams possess the ability, together, to deliver, if they understand the skills, strengths and styles that exist within it.

We have a successful track record of working with teams because we enjoy working with groups drawn together to work!  We see that individual similarities and differences all have their place in a highly successful team that works well together.

Our work with teams has included:

  • Developing improved team working and interaction  between members so that the full range of talents can be utilised in achieving team goals.  Often this work involves developing more collaborative and shared ways of working on projects.
  • Assessing working styles in teams and the preferred ways of approaching work that bring about change in teams to deliver outcomes that the team are working towards.
  • Supporting teams with techniques and strategies  where change is the constant theme and working with uncertainty and ambiguity are key skills.  We have worked with several teams in times of transformation and great change by helping them understand the cultures and the values that are driving the way business is undertaken.
  • Improving the effectiveness of senior teams to deliver major reform that is required by the business.  This has included some skills development for boards and support with the implementation of techniques to increase communication.

Ongoing work
We are currently working with an organisation in the financial sector developing a greater level of understanding of the strengths and styles of the individuals in the policy team and how these operate together at the whole team level.  We are also supporting a longer term team development programme for staff working in the rail transport industry.  This involves forming new teams made up of staff from diverse backgrounds and technical professions.
